i've been a lil obsessed with this little ditty for months now and kinda seems appropriate for a farewell to 2008. let's toast to the promise of 2009.
happy new year all from that gal in BK!

niners win

best end of season hurrah: niners 27, redskins 24. game ending field goal sealed the deal and singletary is back as our official coach next season. too bad singletary didn't start his stint a few games earlier. sigh! those arizona cardinals, so don't deserve to represent the NFC west. they aren't going into the playoffs with the momentum that the niners had at the end of this season. here's to next season. this faithful can't wait.

dichotomy of holiday releases

second rate sin city: the spirit. it's no sin city but you'll enjoy the visual spectacle you come to expect from a frank miller flick. gabriel macht isn't bad eye candy either. this noiresque graphic novel complete with a femme fatale named sand saref (aka eva mendes) falls short on plot and overall character complexities. still glad i saw it. i can get enough of the black and white scheme peppered with color.

best heart wrenching tour de force: revolutionary road. i have been highly anticipating this adaption after hearing that it be an onscreen reunion for kate and leo. i did my homework and read the richard yates novel. it was raw and utterly depressing, but there was something remarkably truthful in it as well. so this meaty material translated brilliantly onscreen by sam mendes (aka mr. winslet). you know a film is good when you come out numb and in need of something to jolt you back into reality. the film was a roller coaster of hope and tragedy elegantly acted by both leads. i felt tugged, emotionally battered and mentally in a fetal position. i'm still in recovery. i can say seeing it on screen, outside the pages of the novel, hit me harder. the film made it achingly more real. i need a hug or a stiff drink.

rip: eartha kitt

very sad and strange because i was just chatting with my friends at a christmas dinner last night about eartha kitt and her rendition of "santa baby". also, how she was catwoman.

bon iver covers the outfield's "your love"

yeah not sure about about this cover. i think justin should stick to sarah siskind's lovin's for fools. if he isn't going to rock it out, don't cover "your love". man, i REALLY wanna karaoke now. anyone? just listen and tell me you don't wanna sing.

HIMYM dress-up goodness

the cast of himym reenacted the best of 2008 moments for ew. another reason why this cast is AWESOME!

noah and the whale sesh on daytrotter

must monday listen/download: noah and the whale on daytrotter. heart this lovable group from across the pond. they are playing mhow on february 21 for $15. if you haven't seen them, you should they are adorable. i saw their first gig in bk. it was like this.

sharocks oxford street

best british christmas pastime: strolling oxford street to check out the christmas windows. i was planning to do harrod's, but was on oxford having dinner with my very old friend renee that i haven't seen in over 10 years. renee had a point about selfridges being true old timey london goodness and harrod's just a tourist trap. so jason, here's you xmas presie. i've picked the best for ya.

melpo mene, loney dear and takka takka @ bell house

must swede: melpo mene. mel introed me to him and she ended up flaking. boy did she miss out. erik was a cutie. first song up and he broke a string early playing "i adore you". he ended up borrowing a guitar from drew of takka takka.

it was weird no one stood up front. there was an abyss of space between the crowd and the stage. saki was like we should move up. i was like okay and then we proceeded to gesture to the rest to join. erik did too. he seemed to do the trick to get everyone to fill the space. his infectious banter
and colorful description of songs throughout was a treat.

it got better after the gig. he came up to me and saki to chat. he was super friendly and let us take pics. he even gave saki one of his drink tickets. whaaa? that's what i call AWESOME.

must swede #2: loney dear. emil quiet rocks a room. subtle, yet delicate lyrics tickle at shar's heartstrings. i think he was a little miffed by the noisy bar and mentioned twice how songs were for "the bar". saki and i attempted to shhhhhhh them, but only helped a little.

he still had a ball with silent league backing him. it was amazing to see a band pick up on music just meeting 2 hours before. emil made us hum a lot, but it really was a nice touch to his vocals. i felt like a loop machine. he ended with crowd fav "i am john". love, love. emil will be back january 31 at union hall. see him, you won't be sorry.

must kinda swede: takka takka. okay, they aren't swedish but they have a swedish name. i saw them in sf open for architecture in helsinki and clap your hands say yeah two years ago. they were a pleasant surprise then on first listen, so it's only fitting that i come see them in their hometown and now my hometown. i was dead tired by the time they hit the stage, but i was head bopping through out the set. i was a little bummed they didn't encore. i was hoping to hear their cover of phil collins' "in the air tonight".

they recently did a great daytrotter session. it's a good acoustic example of what you missed last night.

bon iver @ town hall

artist that just gets better: bon iver. okay, i was pretty blown away and i had already had the opportunity to see him pre-blow-up. i wasn't sure if he could up that first time, but he did. wow, oh wow! even though i was seated in the heights of the loge, mike and i were lucky enough to be on the side justin was playing on. justin and gang ran through "for emma" and the new ep "blood bank". this was the
set list:

  • flume
  • lump sum
  • for emma
  • beach baby
  • blood bank
  • skinney love
  • creature fear
  • re. stacks
  • wolves
------------------------
i was afraid and i don't know why i doubt bon iver, but i was scared. i thought the massive love for bon iver would kill my love for him. he has made a ton of top 10 lists, but surprisingly came away with little backlash, or little that i know of. i sorta think of tonight's performance as that sweater you borrowed from your boyfriend that you wore all the time and kinda forgot about. it's still there. you love it. it's like a security blanket of coziness. bon iver is wintry knit goodness. so good i set my alarm to wake me up to watch his performance on letterman. shar's lame sleeps by midnight and can't stay up that extra 25 minutes. she sleeps and gets up again for bon iver warmth. yes, i can sleep in that lil span of time. i'm a professional power napper.

thanks mike!

supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

best thing next to a spoonful of sugar: seat upgrade at the new amsterdam theatre for mary poppins. the bff is in town so we hit broadway for mary poppins. i got us balconey seats for what i thought was the evening show. got to will call and no tickets for me. they said i had purchased tickets for the afternoon matinee. i could have sworn i booked the evening show. the kind box office gentleman arranged for us to get in. to my surprise, it was an ahhhhmazing upgrade to the orchestra level. SCORE! turned out i did order the 1pm show. oops! i guess with the magic of disney balconey tickets become orchestra. hurrah!

i'll have to email the new amsterdam to send kudos for usher ken and unnamed box office attendee. i'm a customer service praising kick.

things that make me happy

best morning pick me up: the operator on the 2 train around 8:26am. shar hearts you operator. when i walk in you chime in with "this is how we do it in brooooooklyn". when we hit park place, you always say "transfer to the path to neeeeeeeeeeeew jeeeeeeersey". today you said something extra special and told me "may the holiday spirit be with you". how yoda of you. i can never run fast enough form the back of the train to see and thank him at my transfer point, so until that day comes i wrote the mta:

Hi,

I would just like to sing my praise to the operator of the 2-Train around 8:00 shift to Manhattan. I don't always get his train but when I do it's a delight. I love his welcome "This is how we do it Brooklyn". When we hit Park Place, you always say "transfer to the path to neeeeeeeeeeeew jeeeeeeersey". He really brings a smile to my commute.

Also, on Monday he was kind enough to keep us informed about a delay at Borough Hall. He provided us with clear instruction to alternate route. He chimed in with whatever we needed "to keep moving".

Until I can thank him personally (I'm always at the end of the train before I can get to thank him personally), I hope this message and kudos gets to him.

Sincerely,
Sharock

diorama tuesday

must first tuesday activity: diorama tuesdays at freddy's. i've been meaning to hit up the my local bar for this arts and crafts night. what's better than beer and scissors? jac came along and we went at it. theme = holiday spectacular. i got shut out of the pond at bryant pond so decided to make my diorama based on what i couldn't have today. it turned out like this:here's jac's, which was a lil girl with christmas dreams of lizzy macguire and ballet. check out the giant peering in.
jac was the winner even though we didn't think there was a prize. look how much jac enjoyed it.
