my buddy adam invited me to this uber special occasion and funny enough the location of said party was literally 2 blocks away from my home. alec and pal dave welcomed us with fresh baked cookies and tea. i felt totally bad empty-handed and even worse when the other guests caroline and anthony brought homemade chocolate chip cheesecake. i promised to return to alec's with brownies. we sat and discussed our affinity to sufjan and i told adam to tell the sad story about his lost sufjan ticket on his bday. there was sweet redemption this evening. anthony said how he missed him back when he played at his university and alec said how he saw sufjan at bowery with pep squad in tow. adam added that he drove down from sf to sd to see sufjan play his first gig on the west coast at the casbah. apparently sufjan was uber nervous and shakey.
alec explained the reasoning behind the intimate nature of the dispersion of this track. he and dave had discussed incorporating with a play, but after some threats of youtubing the play and spreading through the interweb. alec decided on the personal listening sessions, which i openly appreciate. after the convo, alec passed around the letter and packaging with the track.
after some technical difficulty with the headphones, we listened to 3 minutes and 13 seconds of lush layered melancholy lyrics of wintry solitude. we were fortunate enough to get a second listen to swap headphones. a discussion about what we thought about the song followed. i distinctly remembered the line "driving to denver" and wanting the track for my very own. adam, the musician that he is, was thorough in his description about technique. alec added that he was impressed by the care and complexity of the composition. we signed a guest book before departing.
we said our goodbyes and am sad i can't recall the lyrics - only a fleeting melody. caroline was able to sing the chorus. thanks alec and dave for being such great hosts. thanks adam for inviting me. i'm forever indebted to you, which means you are welcome to rooftop beers whenever.

"The last thing to say about solitude is that it isn't very polite. Thoreau knew that the "doubleness" that solitude cultivates, the ability to stand back and observe life dispassionately, is apt to make us a little unpleasant to our fellows, to say nothing of the offense implicit in avoiding their company. But then, he didn't worry overmuch about being genial. He didn't even like having to talk to people three times a day, at meals; one can only imagine what he would have made of text-messaging. We, however, have made of geniality — the weak smile, the polite interest, the fake invitation — a cardinal virtue. Friendship may be slipping from our grasp, but our friendliness is universal. Not for nothing does "gregarious" mean "part of the herd." But Thoreau understood that securing one's self-possession was worth a few wounded feelings. He may have put his neighbors off, but at least he was sure of himself. Those who would find solitude must not be afraid to stand alone."

Beyond the Reel: Explorations in Media
APRIL 28, 7:45-9:15PM @ THE APPLE STORE IN SOHO (103 PRINCE STREET)
In an age where you can watch a blockbuster on YouTube and a rooftop can become a movie theater—the way that we view films and filmmaking will never be the same again. The internet has transformed how people watch and interact with moving images, while galleries and new venues for video art have created the chance for multi-screen projections. By bringing together four very different but extremely exciting artists who are expanding the definition of “filmmaker”—this interactive event will give students the opportunity to meet with artists like acclaimed hip-hop video blogger Jay Smooth, video/ game artist Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung and mashup masters Wreck & Salvage. Join us for this experimental evening as we explore spliced archival footage, vlogging, film installation, and video games.

artist sighting of the day: hernan bas. i had to contain my surprise when i saw mr. bas ushering a pal through his exhibit. saki thinks he was on a date. i might have to agree. i was lame and couldn't bring myself to compliment him on this mermaids exhibit that i loved at bk museum.
that's two artist sightings for fltgc. first was when we saw ryan mcginley at team gallery.
random gallery pop by: seeds of the wild at puffin room. lots of very organic pieces from japan to central europe. i was immediately drawn to manami hayasaki's triangle of bugs. it made me think of ester (bug keeper extraordinaire at the san diego zoo).
i liked doug groupp play of imagery. sorta surreally a la dali.

jolie was a delight. she started with "palmyra", which she said was dedicated to her friends in the third ward. she sang my fav "the future", which is similar in vain to the torch singer i experienced last night. jolie did not play her tribute to the sf bay, but you can hear "honey girl" on daytrotter. she did, however strum "mexico city", which is my second fav on her latest album. i'm glad to have finally experience that vocal twang and elongated verse.
david kesting's show opens thursday. april 16, 7-9pm. you should totally go. he will be signing his book utopia parkway. there will also be t-shirts on sale with his prints on them. i accidentally grabbed a sample book christina showed me, but i returned it within the hour. sorry glowlab for my sticky fingers! here is a preview of david's show:
in her other installation, aleph, laurie concentrates sound into space located by a white circle on the floor. here is zaid demonstrating. it kinda looks like he is being abducted by aliens, huh?
belated fltgc staple: artists space. i haven't been back to artists space since the first time i went. i really enjoyed ilana halperin's lava medallions.

unfortunately, it was a hybrid headliner with dan wilson (known for semisonic fame), which meant less time for ms. yamagata. i did appreciate the dichotomy of optimism and pessimism in the road to love. i appreciate rachael's "failed relationship" compositions more. she played "be be your love", "elephants", "happenstance", "faster", "i want you" and a cover with dan of "closing time".

best weekend distraction: bff leigh-anne. the bff swung down from lancaster, pa to hang out for a long weekend. it was just the remedy i needed from the stress of work. we took free photo booth pics at the vitamin water10 pop-up store front on broadway between bleeker and houston. you can just chill in there and get free vitamin water10, which has a bad nutrisweet aftertaste though it's advertised as naturally sweetened. thanks leigh-anne for visiting me!
