vamprie diaries
best remedy to the twilight onslaught: vampire diaries series on cw this fall. holy heck, i was just talking about my love for this series last fall. my hate for twilight is great and i compare it to my much beloved predecessor l.j. smith's vampire diaries. i was flipping channels tonight to find a tip-on for a new series this fall called....the vampire diaries. i suppose i have twilight to thank for bringing teen vampires into pop culture. i read this series back in junior high when it was gifted to me as a birthday present. needless to say, i cannot wait for this new series. it's produced by dawson's creek creator kevin willianson. dude, they got boone from lost to play damon.

fltgc: hous projects and team gallery
notable new gallery to fltgc: hous projects. i was drawn to haley jane samuelson's surreal photography. her collection under the title, another room, captures herself encapsulated in rooms of her apartment. i love her play of light and dark to frame, shadow and light her subjects. she uses natural lighting which is ahhhmazing. for the vinyl lover that i am, above is my favorite shot. it just opened and runs until september 15.disappointing show from a fltgc go to gallery: arcangel, pinard, rouston at team gallery. wow this exhibit really was over my head. i like me some digital art, but this was not my cup of tea. there is a non-affiliated piece downstairs with kitties on pianos. check that out.

st. vincent @ bell house
best "secret" show: st. vincent at bell house. i was on this once i heard the word from my trusty bell house newsletter. shar is indeed one of the bell house's much frequent customers. thanks for getting a super duper awesome act for appreciation night. sure, i just saw her about a month ago. i can't get enough of her and at my fav venue for only $10. i could not pass that up.it's the first time i've seen annie perform in an outfit that wasn't all black. she opened with "marry me", which was fitting since several guys professed their desire to propose matrimony to the fair annie. she continued with selections from "actor", including "the strangers", "black rainbow" and "actor out of work".

shar hearts wnyc
reason to consider going back to npr: wnyc. it's been almost two years since i was employed at a npr affiliated establishment. my pal adam who i used work with at the former npr station was kind enough to get me into check out the rival station.first stop, soundcheck studios for some iggy pop one on one. he sure was eloquent and surprisingly deep. i'm not sure about his new concept album, preliminaires.
that was followed by a set by elizabeth and the catapult.
lastly, a short tour of the station. kinda puts the Q to shame. sorry Q still love you and technically i'm still pledging your services even though i don't use them anymore.

common sighting
celeb sighting of the day: common in union square. jac and i saw him as we left the yard sale at urban. we were walking down 14th when some dude exclaims "oh shit!" shar did NOT play it cool for she looked and kept telling jac "it's common, it's common" when jac was merely trying to play it cool. anyhoot, wish i asked him about james mcavoy, but he was on his mobile yo.
little joy @ bowery ballroom
best warm up to summer: little joy at bowery ballroom. this was a long anticipated concert as shar had missed out on their gig in the fall. so i ran out to get tickets when they hit the box office. saki and hanna were in tow though there will be folks that will be disappointed they didn't get tickets before it sold out. leading up to their performance we had to deal with annoying people busting in front of us. i had to throw out a "are you fucking serious?" to get a couple to move back to their respect spots BEHIND me.
rodrigo was immensely engaging and i forgot fab wasn't in tow for the tour. he even shook his tush during "don't watch me dancing". adorable!
binki 's rendition of "unattainable" was what i was looking most forward to. i got a vid, but i have to upload and hope to update and post here soon.
but the night's highlight by far was when fab and regina spektor took the stage for the final tune, "brand new start". little joy provided support for regina at the beacon last wednesday, so a pleasant pay back.

setlist (including covers of mamas and papas' "midnight voyage" and gil gilberto's "procssao". also new song, "with strangers"

two fashion favs join forces

i don't blog about fashion much because i'm not much of a designer label whatchamacallit person. i do love jcrew, though i haven't shopped them in a while. AND i do love tretorn, swedish purveyors of casual sneaks, rain boots and easy breezy sportswear. so when tretorn offered their classic trainers on jcrew, it's a worth a blog. fashionista or not.

FLTGC: karl haendel @ harris lieberman
must monochromatic exhibit: karl haendel at harris lieberman. it was a solo fltgc because someone was stuck in a meeting. sad but true. so hit this up alone. i thought i was closing tomorrow but this is not was the ingenious show flyer stated otherwise.
yup, that's a brown paper bag. haendel is an interesting cat blending pop culture, war propaganda and humpty dumpty. in his how to have a socially responsible orgasm and other life lesson. his intricate and detailed graphite drawing envelop the space at harris lieberman. here are just some of my favs:

humpty #3
these remind me of warhol's brillo boxes.

npr has it going on
as i do every morning i loaded in my npr player to get the day started right. i was pleasantly surprised with my hometown station branding. i do send a lot of npr links because i heart them so. i assume they grabbed my local station from that. sorry wnyc, i still donate to the q.

littlefield
best new bar treasure: littlefield. holy moly, shar hearts this place, and it may give bell house a run for it's money in shar's heart of hearts. my pal jason told me about it a couple weeks back and i had planned to check it out. i was hankering for beer and got my bud eric to scout out with me post dinner. i don't know how much more i can rave about it on top of my yelp review. it's got a eco goodness built into the space with recycled bowling lanes and wind power energy. i'm excited to check out a show there. hurrah littlefield!

farmer shar
best way to get down and dirty with your foods: field trip to la baraja. i joined the tribeca csa with jac a month back after getting shut out of the prospect heights chapter. the good thing about the tribeca csa is that it's their first year, so we, as founding members, have a hand at what the farm grows. so when i heard there was a field trip, shar was anxious to sign up. mollie and teresa jumped on the bandwagon for this uber tasty trip. boy was it was it a treat to head up to goshen.

it's magic

way to save a series: orlando magic game 3. game 2's overtime loss was a heart breaker, but the magic showed fight last night and pulled off a win. their first franchise win in a nba final. whew! former warrior mickael pietrus contributed 18 points last night and the awesome memory above.

reasons to be pretty
must catch before it closes broadway show: reasons to be pretty. i have been meaning to catch this since it opened and with the recent news that it's closing this week i was on this pronto. angela scored us student rush tickets and we were there. thanks angela! neil lebute writes enthralling, yet biting dialogue that cuts to the core. also, i love mr. lebute for introducing me to aaron eckhart via in the company of men. he has always been able to capture the everyday man's vernacular to a tee and in this play a remark about a face being "regular" sets off a windfall of expletives. it's quite the commentary on physical beauty. it made me think of what i think of beauty. plain to me is beautiful. t-shirts and jeans. okay a dress here and there, but on the whole i love to be casually comfy. i identified with steph (girl with the regular face), but i didn't like how she prettied it up in the end. love being comfortable in your skin. that's true beauty, right?

theresa andersson looping in her kitchen
shar discovered theresa andersson early this spring from a npr tip. shar loves her scandies and a scandie transplanted in nola is even more intriguing. she's delightfully sweet with a tinge of bluegrassy, alt country goodness. love love LOVE! she's not touring here on the east coast. looks like she's hitting her hometown most of the summer. come to ny, theresa, pretty puh-lease. for now, you kids can check her out on a wfuv sesh and the vids of her on youtube.

renegade craft fair
semi-satisfying repeat crafting event: renegade craft fair. i had a great time last year at the fair despite the blistering heat. this year the fair was moved from mccarren pool to the park. it was more spread out, but fewer booths with less variety. my high school classmate taryn had a booth there, so i had to show her some support. she makes ab fab leather hand cut jewelry and porcelain buttons under the moniker, tom girl. she's awesome and glad i was able to help her hold up her display during the swirls of wind.
i realized i'll be home for the sf renegade. i'm uber excited since i'm curious to see the line-up that the west coast brings. there are quite the crafters there and in the pacific northwest. who's down my bay area crew?
