ode to npr music

let me count the ways... #1

shar loves her some saadiq. growing up on tony! toni! tone!, you can't help but appreciate the yay area tunes coming from this r&b pioneer. digging the dapper hep cap look.

#2 and #3 exclusive first listen of noah and the whale's latest the first day of spring and rosanne cash's the list

noah and the whale is breaking my heart. stephen thompson is calling it the best breakup album of the year. it's perfect for the grey fall that's fast approaching. rosanne's honky tonk swagger on her latest album is just right for the fall road trip i wanna take to get in some fall foilage. she makes dad proud.

the agony of...

worst feeling:
...defeat. oh golly, it hurts. brings shar back to when she was a little girl of ten and distraught over niners' losses. i didn't see the game. only highlights, but follwing it on gamecast was just as brutal if not worse. waiting for it to refresh is anxiety ridden. so we fall to 2-1, but we still lead the nfc west. i'm hoping for a victory next week against the rams. goooooo niners!

groovaloo

best breaking: groovaloo. former b-boy dean clued me into this performance and it was perfect for angelina's last night in new york, as she is a connoisseur of hip hop culture. we also had the equally hip hop savvy vanessa in tow. with the rise of abdc, sytycd and america's got talent, the forum for breaking has been highlighted more in the past couple years. shar isn't an expert of breaking like my fellow theatre goers, but i did enjoy the masterful skill and acrobatics of it all.

last night's closing performance at the joyce theatre was thrilling and testament to how the hip hop culture has come into mass culture recognition. the production was packaged for a general audience, complete with spoken word monologues for each dancers' stories. this reminded me of my friends at youth speaks and poetry mission. i would have liked to see more of the "raw" side of the dance...dare i say hyphy, but i understand the need to create a narrative and history for those less familiar.

needless to say, the crowd was thoroughly entertained. there was a little boy in front of us waving his arms throughout the performance. an older couple behind him (i'm guessing his grandparents) had brought him. they were in suit and dress. it was telling how diverse the audience has become for this once underground dance.

in-i

noteworhty visceral performance: closing night for in-i. i wrote about this previously and got me some tickets for closing night. my pal angelina was in town and down for some brooklyn arts goodness.

i read a so so review from the uk stint, but my friend catherine gave it a glowing review. my perspective of it was a little in between. i liked it, but didn't whole-heartily set it to my heart's of hearts. this is why:
1.) wassup with the squeaky shoe action?
2.) i could have done without the monologues. bring on the dancing.
3.) although juliette binoche does an excellent job keeping up with akram khan (he choreographed kylie minogue's showgirl concert), she is no virtuoso of dance.

all in all, i had a great evening of artistic stimulation. i did enjoy the frenzy of kinetic movement that binoche and khan displayed. angelina was almost moved to tears. i, of course, shed few tears because i am the girl with no soul. i cry inside people. it was a performance that moved me to think about love that engulfs your every being. unable to be without another person. long for them despite their resistance. it's a telling tale of desire, bonding and strife. intense!

bay area news project

most newsworthy: bay area news project.Dear Sharock,

In the spirit of news eminences such as Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite, KQED has been your television and radio source for accurate, factual, local, national, and world news for more than 55 years. However, we are now finding that newsrooms are shrinking and meaningful content is vanishing, replaced with sound bites, often "… full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." So today we are very proud to announce a new, not-for-profit collaborative news initiative that will focus on local topics that are increasingly underserved. San Francisco business leader Warren Hellman spearheads this brave new venture; joining KQED is the University of California Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, as well as our print distribution partner, The New York Times.

The News Project plans to debut in early 2010. As one of the most sophisticated markets in the world, the Bay Area deserves a robust multi-platform news service. The new service is intended to feature original content produced by the professional journalists of the Bay Area News Project, as well as the journalists of the KQED Radio newsroom. It will be distributed online, mobile, and through other media platforms, so no matter how you choose to get your news, we’ll be your go-to source. Read more, then tell us what you think. We welcome your thoughts and feedback.

And thanks for your loyalty to KQED.

the broken kilometer

return to fltgc: dia soho for walter de maria's broken kilometer. shar enjoys all things dia. dia: beacon. the dan flavin art institute (i still have to make that trip, so who's down for fall hamptons trip?). so when i heard about this new installation just around the corner from my work, guess who was down?

jac said she's disappointed when she sees pictures of a work, and it's really not that much different in real life. i asked jac for her take, and she asked to see the tony advert. she said definitely better in person. so peeps it's jac approved. go!

niners: 2-0

best consulation: niners win, 23-10. shar's totally lost her mojo on her pigskin pick em's, but she's a happy camper as long as the niners keep winning. run frank, run! two rushing tds for 79+ yards. hope you kids playing fantasy picked up gore.

bright star

best swoon worthy cinema: bright star. oh how shar loves her period piece romances and oh how jane campion can create a film of longing ache for the one you love. reading a letter from the one you pine for leaves you weak in knees that you collapse into a field of lavender. looks across a room speak volumes of desire and passion.

i didn't know much about abbie cornish aside from that fact that she's has been dating ryan phillippe.
girl can act. her physical unwinding at the end of the film reminded me of a young kate winslet in sense and sensibility pining for a said willoughby. then there is keats, played by a fine thespian, ben winshaw. ladies, he has a twin. he is a a new brit heartthrob on the rise. he has already played hamlet and takes on another shakespearen role of ariel in julie taymor's the tempest. in the end, it's the secret romance between keats and one fanny brawne that moves the story. one bright star and muse to the poet that never realized his success in his life time, but remains one of the most famous poets in history.

Bright Star

Bright star, would I were stedfast as thou art--
Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night
And watching, with eternal lids apart,
Like nature's patient, sleepless Eremite,
The moving waters at their priestlike task
Of pure ablution round earth's human shores,
Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask
Of snow upon the mountains and the moors--
No--yet still stedfast, still unchangeable,
Pillow'd upon my fair love's ripening breast,
To feel for ever its soft fall and swell,
Awake for ever in a sweet unrest,
Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath,
And so live ever--or else swoon to death.

shar <3s jason

hardest goodbye: jason's bon voyage. jason's off to taiwan (via the bay) to explore a new place and basically have a blast. shar's going to miss him terribly. from watching march madness with a box of wine to scouting out the neighborhood waterholes, jason has been the man in my life for my past 2 years in new york. shar hates goodbyes, so it will be more a see you later on the flip side. flip side being southeast asia sometime next year.

niners win!

oh west coast games for a faithful on the east coast is difficult. shar wishes she saw this opener win. i would have done a couple of chest butts after gore scored the game winning rushing td.

us open craziness

i can't believe i missed this last night. here's serena's take on it, and i must say classy after a whirlwind loss.

fltgc: anna sui

random break from fltgc: anna sui target pop-up store. fashion as art i suppose for this week's edition of fltgc. jac and i braved the windy and wet weather to check out the fuss over the gossip girl inspired threads. i only took a few pics because i was a bit irked by the random models lounging. very serena and blair. there is a good gallery of the visual design of the pop-up here.

one of the dresses in the collection. prolly the most age appropriate for moi. i really wanted this skirt but they didn't have any more in my size. i did like the orange and brown palette for the vanessa look. i'm more a bk gal anyhow i suppose.

st. vincent rocks fasion week

shar isn't a fashionista, but she enjoys pretty things. i rarely blog the clothes, like a certain someone i know, but i had to post this pic. annie rocked rachel comey's show. wish i could walk the runway in rachel's frocks to annie's vocals.

bam next wave festival

must fest attendance: bam's next wave festival. shar's a little ashamed that having lived in brooklyn for almost 2 years i have yet to attend the next wave festival. i'm determined to go this year and there is a ton of good stuff. at the top of my list is in juliette binoche's venture into dance, in-i.

shar is intrigued by the long count, a pairing of the brothers dessner of the national and matthew ritchie. the piece combines visual and instrumental art into one. shara from my brightest diamond and the sisters deal of the breeders will be lending their vocals too. sounds like some indie rock heaven to me.

lastly, there's the dame of all dames, cate blanchett, in a streetcar named desire. this isn't part of the next wave festival, but a must at bam. who's down to get their culture on in bk?

storm king

much belated day excursion: storm king. it's been a long time a coming and i finally made it up with a minivan full of friends. it was on my to do and jason's to do before he leaves us. here's the craziness we got into.

check out the segment wnet just did on storm king. the president's commentery is a bit of a yawnfest, but the footage is nice.

sassy at the us open

best surprise: melanie oudin. this whipper snapper has taken out both elena dementieva and maria sharapova already. she was also a name to watch after upsetting jelena jankovic in the third round of this year's wimbledon. shar's excited to see her continue in the open. next up is nadia petrova. hopefully oudin's streak against russians will continue. she's got a great top half of the draw, so shar's rooting for her to make the finals.

best return: kim clijsters. shar's always loved clijsters' drive and splits. also liked her off court
relationship with lleyton hewitt, which didn't last unfortunately. she got hitched to an american basketball player instead. she retired too early in my opinion and so glad she came out of retirement. it's going to be rough for her, facing venus tomorrow. i'd love a oudin versus clijsters final, but that will be highly unlikely i'm afraid.

post-peru photo du jour

belated peru post: so it's been a week since shar's returned from one of the most memorable adventures in her life. people have asked me how was it and it's been hard for me to come up with the words that define the trip. i know it's cheesy but a picture is worth a thousand words.

pics taken by me, angela, shinae and andrew.

fltgc: kehinde wiley and davis rhodes

return to fltgc: kehindle wiley's black light at deitch and davis rhodes's untitled '09 at team gallery. shar was excited for wiley's latest exhibit. i was first introduced to him last fall when i saw his show, down, at the wooster space. this was a new look at his works as photography versus the photorealistic painting we have come to signify with wiley's style. jac likes the one to the right because of the expression of the subjects face. kinda like a deer in headlights, no?

davis rhodes creates "paintings" that are spray painted on vinyl and staples them up for display. this installation method creates a sculptural form. his concept challenges the way we view painting. some might see the works as vinyl canvases simply broken through. art with little pretense and thought, but there is craft in simplicity even though it doesn't always seem that way. check it out and you be the judge. it's up until october 3.

another reason why brooklyn vegan needs to start paying me with tickets:

funny note -
my pal julie tumbled this pic without realizing i was the purveyor of wolf love prose.
