fltgc: white cube and seventeen
first but not last gallery field trip: white cube, hoxton square. shar was here back in december for some good ol' damien hirst. this time it was marc quinn, who i'm not too familiar with. i was amused by marc's sculptures ranging from the black and white michael jackson ground placed busts to the preggers thomas beatie. the bronzes of the former contestant on dancing with the stars, pam anderson, somehow enhanced her golden tan a la baywatch and her ummm surgical enhancements.best recommendation: seventeen gallery. the loverily christina ray passed along this delightful trove of art goodness when i told her about my london stint. i was able to catch abigail reynold's strange attractor show on it's last day. i loved the intricately spliced images of layered ornate period rooms. they are like a fusion of origami and rococo.
the gallery attendant pointed me towards the other exhibit located in the depths of seventeen. i was greeted with a montage of videos from forcefield (a former whitney biennial artist circa 2002).

frenchy open
so close but too many € away: french open 2010. shar's always wanted to complete the grand slam of tennis champs. i've only managed to hit up the us open, and have my sights set on wimbledon next month. you will be mine, oh yes! you will be mine strawberries and cream with pimms cocktails. i knew i would be near roland garros, but i didn't realize the the duckets i would have to drop to get there. more my fault for no planning ahead. so i must settle for this.

it's been a gorgeous weekend. been keeping with my early bird ways (so much for jetlag) and took a jaunt in the hood.
sfny is the new traveling gnome. shar doesn't shoot like one hanna banana though.

so long, farewell
when shar's left companies or cities, she made top ten's so here goes one for new york (until i return)
top things shar will miss from ny in the next six months*
10.) red hook ball fields - latin goodness in rows of trucks
9.) fltgc, though i can do this in london i won't have the proximity of galleries in soho and les to visit. deitch is closing at the end of the month and kinda fitting that i caught the last show.
8.) free summer concerts - summerstage, south street seaport, battery park for the 4th. kids don't miss she and him on the 4th at governor's island and best coast and south street seaport on july 23. shar wants a full report!
7.) bfc - biking with my crew mike, jen, eric and michele. missing out on the philly bike trip. :(
6.) chillin' in prospect park under my tree
5.) outdoor movies at empire state park
4.) fall foliage, maybe i'll catch the tail end of it
3.) habana outpost - oh sweet cheesy mexican corn and sixpoints brews
2.) kula. the thursday night crew - lauren, tara, jen, alexia, steph and of course the droge.
1.) my urban balcony that leads to my rooftop
*of course all miss all my fab friends in nyc, so this is a given that is not listed in the top ten.

patrick watson at 92y tribeca
thomas bartlett (aka doveman) opened for him. i've only seen him play ditties from footloose, so was a treat to hear some of his own compositions. one he wrote about angel's share.
the entirety of mr. watson's set was intimately lit and he was full of cheer to be in nyc. he likes how 92y tribeca pours a mean whiskey in a pint glass. sweet! megaphones were used to full capacity. you might be wonder what the heck that first pic was. well friends it's the megaphone capacitator. what you say? it's a backpack with 5 megaphones attached to amplify in intimate spaces like the one last night. pat weaved himself into the middle of the crowd for max megaphoning. the one below was a more of a traditional use of megaphoning with plunger top.

pat likes to cross his legs when he is at the piano
i was lame and missed out on a hang out sesh with mr. watson. shar's a loser. mollie, how was pat? did he love my dollywood reference?

fltgc: tony style
fltgc celeb planner: tony, this week's fltgc orchestrator. linda and i followed this gallery crawl. first up was gavin brown's enterprise and was welcomed with this.

doh! no biggie more art to see and i will catch you next week gbe. next up was deitch's last show (sniff sniff) - shepard fairey's may day. saw the mural a few weeks back. it's also in the wooster space amongst this below.

down the street to the drawing center, where unfortunately they don't allow photos. tony highlighted the leon golub show, live & die like a lion, but i was more enthralled by the exhibit across the street by dorothea tanning. her sketches of costumes for the famed choreographer george balanchine are whimsical with a touch of mutant qualities.
last up was a fav of fltgc, team gallery for the latest show by norwegian gardar eide einarsson's large scale black and white paintings.

shar and sharon
soon to be face to face: sharon van etten. shar's been really wanting to see her for about a year, but our paths have not crossed. i was kicking myself that i was missing her on friday. she's playing union hall, and shar will be at y92 for patrick watson and doveman. but after some interwebbing, i discovered she's doing an in store at rough trade a day after my bday. happy birthday to me. so sharon, i will see you then on the other side of the pond. UPDATE: shar's lame and i wont' see sharon afterall. the concert was last year. :(
so you too can be thoroughly enthralled by her ghostly voice. this is a performance that prolly made npr's robin hilton cry.
still not enough, check her daytrotter sesh here.

design c.l.o.t.
best way to get creative inspiration: design c.l.o.t. at powerhouse arena. shar was fortunate to attend the opening reception for design c.l.o.t. my pal vanessa was showing her final project among other pratt industral design grads. vanessa has taken her pasion for hip hop culture and infused it into housewares and furniture. it's dope to say the least. check it here.others that impressed me at the showcase were:
* michael roopenian's wooden keyboard
* lys hunter schwartz's tea for two. i could see her stuff with alessi or oxo.
* tawny hixson's cozy cup. her work totally typifies the danish term, "hygge". that warm engulfy feeling you get from a warm sweater or the intimacy of candlelight.
* vanessa marie robinson's for the love of bikes. perfect pre-five boro tour exhibit.
* helene harley kenny's tactile sculptures are perfect for the high line.
you've got a week to catch this show. ends may 9.
