fltgc: eleven rivington and scaramouche

first timers to fltgc: brooke and jesse. jesse is a pal that my buddy marie introed me. she told me that her pal needed someone to gallery crawl with in ny . hello, i am shar. i welcome all orphaned crawlers. brooke was visiting from philly and is a art lover extraordinaire.

we hit up eleven rivington for the hilary berseth exhibit. hilary is a pal of my coworker rachel. she'd raved about it last weekend, so we had to check it out. he does amazing things with honey bees, but that wasn't on show. instead there are some great coral-like copper sculptures and methodical dotted grids. that's me mesmerized on the right. you can't see the dots but they are there. hilary reveals the method to the dot madness on the sides of his paintings. fun!

next up was lehmann maupin for the lee bul exhibit. this was an impromptu visit, and i was pleasantly surprised by the by the hanging smorgasbord of metal and wood. it's an interesting juxtaposition of mixed materials into intricate, yet weird pieces.

last up was scaramouche. this was a jesse pick. cristiana palandri's "sculptures" are a bit morbid for me. she, too, like hilary uses bees wax, but she throws in human hair and some animals bones to round it out. i'm not entirely sure i got this.

owen pallett at webster hall

shar wasn't able to make owen pallett's concert due to work obligations, so i'm uber glad that npr recorded the gig. i do wish i was there to witness the glory that was the mariah cover as owen's final encore tune.

help andy fight the fight

noteworthy do gooder of the day: andy lynch. my pal andy has been fighting the good fight for the tenderloin childern's playground for months now. he has been a long time volunteer there and recent budget crunches are threatening fee hikes for programs. andy has waited in line to speak to the man himself, mayor newsom. you can read about it here.

be still my sharky heart

reason not to turn my back: san jose shark win playoff series against the colorado avalanche.

dear sharkies,

please forgive shar for her lack of faith in your perseverance. after game 3, i was flooded with memories of playoffs past. i should have believe in you more. shame on me! here we come semis.

ashamed of herself,

morning benders at mhow

must second time around: morning benders at music hall of williamsburg. the second sold out show for the quintet from my homiest of home towns. if you haven't heard of them or seen the viral vid, you should friends - pronto. you'll understand what the fuss is all about.

holiday shores were a surprisingly pleasant opener. the lead vocalist reminded me of ezra from vampire weekend. i think it's the cardigan, no?

twin sister sat in since their nor
mal band had some difficulties getting to the gig. dare i blame the volcano. anyhoot, the shores remind me of a mix between vampire weekend sans african beats and a little sprinkle of the surfer blood floridian beach water. they were good fun and a nice sunny warm up for the benders to come.

the interlude that welcomed the fab foursome to the stage was vintage bay area goodness. some r&b jam that i wasn't able to make out but was in the vein of an r. kelly groove. kmel love lines, anyone? chris and gang barreled into "stitches", followed by their first single off big echo, "promises". with the majority of the set coming from the new album, chris wanted to make each sold out gig special and played a new tune "go grab a stranger" for the brooklyn crowd. the kids wanted to dance and the benders obliged playing "all day day light".

all the fun came to a fitting conclusion with "excuses". i was disappointed that they didn't play it the last time i saw them. glad to have finally see the tune live complete with a up close and personal brush with chris.

fltgc: ned vena and shepard fairey

newbies to fltgc: ned vena at clifton benevento and shepard fairey collab with deitch. first up was clifton benevento, open only for a month. i was a little bummed i missed the whimsical opening exhibit big apple, instead i saw ned vena's grand pieces utilizing linens and acid-etched mirrors. in the new space, it's an interesting installation that included stitching over electrical outlets.

there's a bloody mary brunch this sunday at clifton benvento from noon to 5pm.
shepard fairey replaced os gemeos at houston and bowery

obey wallpaper?
there was a elephant too
shep's mural is a preview of the final show at deitch - may day. it opens may 1. shar will be there for deitch's last hurrah.

i'm from barcelona

shar misses swedes, so when i stumbled upon this vid from la blogotheque i was pleasantly surprised. kristin and i put "mingus" on our clap! clap! mixtape. in this vid, it was a nice crescendo to an insider's look into post-concert goodness. love, love emanuel's cover of sleepy jackson's "rain falls for wind". it was a nice flipside of the craziness i'm used to seeing from him (ie. jumping over turnstiles and destroying a perfectly lovely acoustic guitar). dang, i really need to see them live.

don't quit your day job

must try it once: helium aerial dance's aerial arts class. angela and elaine were in tow. they totally rocked the silks too. friends, this is some serious work. sure looks fun and easy, but let me assure you it is not. pink sure made it look easy on the grammy's. next up trapeze though not running off to the circus soon.

freelance whales at other music

best get in their face in store: freelance whales at other music. julie (wish you were here) tipped me off on this freebie goodness. freelance whales say hi. insert fin wave.

i learned about the whales from none other than npr. surprised? you shouldn't be. they did an ab fab xpn sesh. freelance whales infuse the banjo, harmonium, xylophone, mandolin, guitar and bass tenor drum. the band members pass around banjo, xylophone and guitar. very much like arcade fire. they all sing too. fun! "generator 1st floor" totally reminds me of a toned down architecture in helsinski. here's a nice vid shot from npr at sxsw.

it was a treat to see them in other music all cozy. sans mics. just voices soaring against cd racks.

30 sun salutations later

"listen to your life. see it for the fathomless mystery that it is. in the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace."

- fred buechner

this little note was placed in my right hand 30 sun salutations later. at kula, we complete x number of sun salutations for a given birthday girl or boy. today was jen g.'s bday, so despite the struggle all the sweat and focus go to her. happy birthday jen!

fltgc: ryan mcginley at team and jules de balincourt at deitch

must duo: ryan mcginley at team gallery + jules de balincourt at deitch. shar missed fltgc in soho, so this was an all star pairing. ryan's everybody knows this is nowhere presents a ton of black and white portraits of youths. in addition there are large scale color pieces juxtaposing stark landscape and the individual. catch it before it close april 17 or you'll be sorry.

can you see? there's someone sitting in the middle.

owl butt

jules de balincourt was a new artist to me. his vibrant colors and crazy swirl of shapes drew me in. reading up on him i found out he started starr space in bushwick. wow! expiration date: april 24.

best coast at mercury lounge

best heatwave concert: best coast at mercury lounge. it twas a crap work day, and i didn't even get to enjoy the sun for lunch. so sweet bethany's tunes with bobb's bass lines were the perfect remedy to cull my work blues. bethany's lyrics harken back to days of fun in the sun, surfer boys and beach goodness. ahhh, makes me miss california. shar can't wait for the LP later this year.

there was love for jersey shore (the tv show) and an update on snacks (her beloved cat) as well. bv got some good shots of last night's gig at the knitting factory, check it here. these are mine.

set list

london-assisi-rome

best whirlwind travel: london - assisi - rome. fresh off a week in portland, shar was off to london for meetings and threw in a roman holiday to visit her pal kristen along with the rest of the mcredmond clan. here is some of the goodness that ensued.

this is what a proper pub quiz looks like. we came in third. not bad for a team with a pair of yanks.
