the red river at piano's

must california fix for wintry blues: the red river at piano's. though the show room at piano's was not packed, the vocals of bill roberts and friends filled the hearts of their faithful fans who braved the single digit temperatures. opening up with "milk n' honey", the gang immediately brought smiles to everyone's faces. bill's got some sweet moves too. their set fell under an hour, but they did encore with "man of the frontier". watching them made think how much fun it would be to tour the country with some of your best friend's playing tunes for whoever would watch you. it's was a treat. no image and not a single pair of skinny jeans in sight for this long beach, ca crew.

bummed i missed out on the opportunity to swing on one of these. shar loves swinging and ohsanfran's mission to restore the loss of youth is most commendable. nothing is better than feeling the wind whoosh through your hair, even when this might happen to you.

will someone with ifc please invite shar over for some portlandia goodness this evening? i've had a girl crush on carrie brownstein from the first time i heard her chime in with the dudes of all songs considered (bob boilen, robin hilton and stephen thompson). when i heard she was doing a sketch show with snl's fred armisen, i was intrigued. from the clips, carrie is fab despite her little experience in acting. here is a good npr spotlight on portland in the midst of the tv premiere.



anyone whose been to my apartment knows i "put a bird on it". yes, we do it too in brooklyn.

required listening: best of daytrotter 2010. the kids at daytrotter have complied the best tracks from their stellar sessions of last year. daytrotter introduced me to tennis and dale earnhart jr. jr. last year and shar is forever thankful. the compilation includes others like beach house, local natives, and ra ra riot. if that wasn't enough, they have also posted a reader's choice selection.

best layover: SFO > SAN. got in early to SF so was able to hit up in n' out before catching my connecting to san diego. thanks to my parents who were perfectly timed for a pick up, drive by and dropoff. they rule! yesterday's meal: #1 animal style. no pickles or tomatoes.

the magic flute

best production: the magic flute. shar's been hearing about the julie taymor production of the magic flute, so i sucked it up and got standing tickets for the met. 100 minutes of standing. good thing i got in my morning kula shot. the opera was thankfully abridged, but unfortunately in english. friends, opera in english just doesn't have soul. sorry! though i love me some mozart, i was here for the sets and costumes. ms. taymor delivered and brought me the chills i got when i first saw the lion king. giant puppets coupled with flowing fabrics and ribbons. gorgeous!

38-7! wish they had won last week, but this faithful will still be rooting for a playoff birth next year.

cassel's sweet moves

new flavor of the month: vincent cassel. this clip just gave me a new appreciation for this frenchman. his lines remind me of fred astaire in royal wedding with a splash of gene kelly. shoulda remembered his sweet capoeira moves in ocean's twelve. wish they let him dance more in black swan now.

goodbye 2010! hello new decade of adventures. not sure i'll be able to match my previous years travel log - 9 countries (portugal, spain, denmark, sweden, morroco, germany, greece, france, italy), not including a six month stint in london.
