tiny desk concert: first aid kit

polica at rock shop

best belated venue experience: rock shop for polica.  the buzzworthy band was the perfect first show for me at the rock shop.  i've watched a few sports event upstairs, but hadn't yet experienced music goodness.  the spot is cozy and shar loves a good comfy show.  the sound was pretty great too, which is always something i am weary about with smaller venues.

polica delivered the goods.  i've been awaiting the time i would see them live since viewing their video on the current. led by the affable channy leaneagh, this audio-tuned out band sports not one but two drummers and a bassist.  running through their first album, give you the ghost, channy crooned through settings like "harmony hold" and "delay" on her tuning step board.  the band, who goes back into the studio to work on their next album in april, debuted new tracks, "smug" and "exit raw".  channy moves a little like thom yorke did in that "lotus flower" video but way sloooowed down.  they are playing to a brooklyn bowl sunday night.  worth stopping by.  better pics here (if you look closely you'll see a dweeb in the front.)

the method method

The Method MethodThe Method Method by Eric Ryan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

what a treat of a book! admittedly i'm a person against dirty, so this review might be biased however the book is truly inspiring. chronicling adam lowery and eric ryan's ups and downs in the formation of method, they personally reveal the successes and oopses of their 10+ years in the soap business. from slamming a shot of their toilet bowl cleaner to prove a point to the rigors of "homework" in the recruiting process, the book is written personally with a keen sense of humor. an easy quick read that sticks to your core.

fltgc: swiss institute

best "new" replace- ment: swiss institute at the old deitch wooster space.  shar was distraught when deitch closed its doors and was wondering what would occupy their former loft space on wooster street.  when i saw the silver swiss institute banner go up, this art lover was psyched. walk through the door and the playful graphical whimsy of nicolas party welcomes you.

in the main space there is a group show of biennial artist oscar tuazon and others.  downstairs is jimmie durham's maquette for a museum of switzerland.

archers ready

best pre-gaming for the hunger games: queens archery. a bunch of my silly friends and i purchased the groupon months back.  with five days until the premiere of the big screen version of suzanne collin's addictive hunger games. needless to say we had a great time even when we didn't hit the bullseye.

art crawl with kristin: part deux

best part deux: kristin.  okay it only took her four years to get back but happy to team up again for an ultimate art crawl.  so we started off at the whitney biennial, which we both agreed was underwhelming.  there was more concentration on performance art and film.  i was interested in sarah michelson's piece, but we did have tickets or time.

me likies tom thayer
we both liked nicole eisenman
werner herzog
other mentionables, but not snapped were:

best uplift after a lukewarm biennial: cindy sherman @ moma.  woot!  now this is what we needed.  famed photog who's chameleon-like nature weaves all sorts of characters from scary clowns to gorgeous film stills.  totes worth weaving through crowds for this one.  also on the same floor, which we breezed through was the print/out exhibition.

kristin made this
best recommendation: phillips de pury.  mel and bill have been on me to check out this auction house.  kristin was jazzed cause she's been following simon "make it amazing" de pury on work of art. we loved, loved it.

who's #1? KRISTIN! in front of amy gartrell
bill, kristin and i are battling over this chris johanson

fltgc: andreas schulze

must imaginary living room set -up: ohne titel at team gallery (wooster).  it was quite the fanciful living room.  interesting vinyl printed table covers by andreas schulze.  jac liked the darker striped harlequin lamp.  that's her walking by it.  :)  for some reason it reminded me of the be kind rewind exhibit at the former deitch projects.  maybe it was the colors and the sorta in the art feel of it all.  we popped by the swiss institute, which has taken over the aforementioned deitch wooster space but wasn't open because they were installing.
