basia @ bowery

i've been a fan of basia bulat for a while now. ever since i heard her cover of sam cooke's "hem of his garment" i was in love. last night, on a cold evening in manhattan i knew the evening was going to be delightful. sam cooke was playing prior to basia taking the stage. jac and i had a mini dance party. the show wasn't sold out, which made me a little sad since she's quite the talent. needless to say those who where in the audience were enraptured by her prowess on autoharp. one of the amazing things was that you could hear a pin drop during her solo bits. that's a rare, rare occurrence at bowery since there is always bound to be talkers at the back bar. not last night. fans were there because there were there for the music. i loved it and i wished more concert i went to had this atmosphere.

i actually purchased tickets for basia's show on november 23 at bowery.  i'm quite excited. she's one of those artists i'll always love and excited to hear her new stuff live. here's a lovely vid (via la blogotheque) in her native country (didn't know she moved to nyc!!!).

gig shar wishes she was upfront for: basia bulat at mercury lounge. shar's gotten a front row experience in the past, but sure would have liked to see basia's pianoette skills up close and personal. also, her adorable dress that she bought on a side of the road was much envied by the audience.

basia delighted the crowd with tunes largely from her first album oh, my darling. the set was quite similar to her gig i saw about a year and half ago. still haven't seen her singing covers, "touch the hem of his garment" and "true love will find you int he end", but nonetheless basia performed a memorable set. her solo rendition of my fav, "a secret" was my highlight of the night. here's a great review from bv complete with fab pics.

basia's the shore

best consolation prize: basia's belated performance of "the shore" from my home state two years ago. it's was beautifully shot by nate chan for la blogotheque and yours truly. it was archived until now. apparently basia and her label didn't want it posted. her latest album "heart of my own" came out on tuesday. she had to cancel her first brooklyn gig back in october, and i totally snoozed on her intimate release party at professor thom's last thursday thrown by paste and rough trade. this was a nice little gem to mend my broken basia heart. basia please come back soon.

best way to get over withdrawal pains: basia bulat nuggets of gold. shar's still a little bummed that basia had to cancel her gig earlier this month. i got a pleasant surprise a few nights back watching the amazing race and came across the subaru commercial, "lost sunglasses" featuring basia's "before i knew". it's the perfect tune for the spot.

added bonus goodness - rough trade just put up basia's dumbo sesh for her latest single, "gold rush". bobby looks grown up and basia's autoharp skills are tip top. can you tell someone is excited?

good news is ticketweb has already refunded me my dough, but jac is denied again from seeing the canadian cutie. it would have been her first show in brooklyn. basia come back please. for now, i will have to keep myself satisfied with her new tune, "gold rush" from her new album, heart of my own.

basia bulat @ highline ballroom

most anticipated show: basia bulat at highline ballroom. i have been dying to see basia for months and months now. i passed on her may show because she wasn't the headliner and it was at terminal 5. i'm glad i waited. her concert was sadly not sold out tonight. it was seated though, which was nice for a long week. she was every thing i was expecting. charming and sweet with that raspy voice of her's. sigh! love it! she didn't play her covers of daniel johnston's "true love will find you in the end", sam cooke's "touch the hem of his garment" or the strokes "someday", but she did play a cover of bob dylan's "you ain't going nowhere".

she got through most of all her tracks on "oh, my darling" with extras like "gold rush", which is a tribute to the moshers of yukon county. she saved "a secret" and "i was a daughter" for the last half, ending with a gospel hymn "hush".

i got this and had her sign it after the show. she was uber nice and obliged with a lot of picture taking. i asked when she would be back but she didn't know. (sorry jac!) she did say she would be back tho.
