Never Can Say Goodbye: Writers on Their Unshakable Love for New York by Sari Botton

i had previously read "goodbye to all that" and wanted the flip side of those who stayed in new york. this was not that book though a lot of writers intend to come back. one writer who has stayed was rosanne cash and this quote i found particularly telling:

"There are those who come to New York to try on, to burn fast and furious in the workforce, deplete their need for the city and the city's need for them, and move on. And there are those who (to paraphrase the poet Rumi) have New York in them all along. I am one of those, I see New York in the mirror, and New York looks back at me."

i'm approaching my ten year anniversary in this bustling city and don't see moving soon. at moments this book reinforced why i live in new york, like this one:

"My favorite thing in NY is the way people who live here give & ask each other for directions on a daily basis. It's the purest transaction, one that never asks for anything but a quick & honest reply. People who stick their heads in a train & ask where it goes almost always get an answer that doesn't expect a reward; it's an incredible thing to witness..."

i've been a fan of basia bulat for a while now. ever since i heard her cover of sam cooke's "hem of his garment" i was in love. last night, on a cold evening in manhattan i knew the evening was going to be delightful. sam cooke was playing prior to basia taking the stage. jac and i had a mini dance party. the show wasn't sold out, which made me a little sad since she's quite the talent. needless to say those who where in the audience were enraptured by her prowess on autoharp. one of the amazing things was that you could hear a pin drop during her solo bits. that's a rare, rare occurrence at bowery since there is always bound to be talkers at the back bar. not last night. fans were there because there were there for the music. i loved it and i wished more concert i went to had this atmosphere.

best post-iceland reverie: julianna barwick at judson memorial church. who doesn't love concerts in churches??? still glowing post-trip to the nordic, julianna provided the perfect soundtrack for my return home. she worked in iceland with alex somers (of jonsi and alex) on her new album, which was released yesterday. the set ended with prosecco bottles uncorked and plastic glasses clinking. thanks to jen and mike for joining. they too have traveled to the true north. jen shot some great video too.
