sunrise, sunset

"When I've been in Brooklyn for too long, it feels like I can't hold on to any thought. I'm just chasing things. I'm never on time and never really present for my life. I'm just sorta watching it go by in a series of feelings that relate to the sense that I'm missing out on something or that I'm not keeping up."

s.carey @ highline ballroom

best wintry remedy from the bitter cold: s. carey at highline ballroom. sean carey is the drummer of the wintry band bon iver, so you know this boy's got pipes. the highline ballroom was barely full, but those coming in from the snow showers were pleasantly warmed by the lush vocals of mr. carey. he went through the entirety of his debut album, all we grow. he also played a b-side, "leave" and covered notwist's "consequences". (note: opener winter hinterland covered katy perry's "teenage dream" for her last tune of her set.)

my highlight of the night was sean's rendition of "move". quietly moving and held me at every note. swoon! also, 99% sure jens lekman was standing 10 feet away from me enjoying some s. carey goodness. pretty plausible as he was in brooklyn on friday.

here's a great vid of sean below that yours truly filmed in my hometown and a great daytrotter sesh here.

tennis luvin'

homesick

okay these vids just made me a little more home sick. funny what home is. shar has two.

i used to walk down to fairway in red hook when i first moved to ny, so where sharon parked was easy to identify. her dropping fort green, clinton hill and bed sty made me miss all the bk summer goodness. vincent moon captures another great musical voyeuristic treasure. looking forward to winter in ny.

then there's this precious moment between andy of vetiver and eric of fruit bats. i miss how only a short drive away from sf and you are in lovely wine country. there's something about vetiver that brings me that cozy sf bay hug. i need andy and gang to cross the pond to get me out of my funk.

music vid weekend wrap-up

must make-up for lack of music vids posting: sorry friends! the lack of interweb in my flat has drastically caused me to neglect posting vids i've come across. so here are a few shar's stumbled upon that i've found to be noteworthy.

sad shar got shut out of their gig at barfly this past thursday and couldn't make their gig at rough trade the day before because of bss. wish i ran into this session. looks like it was outside victoria park. thanks mie for cluing me in.

belated discovery: patrick watson with the late, great lhasa covering elliot smith's "between the bars". another great fiume night session by vincent moon.

OMG! in my bk hood, would have loved to walk by them filming. funny saw horse feathers at union hall over a year back. hope to catch up with them at the end of the road fest.

also hope to catch the antlers at the aforementioned fest. looks like they filmed a black cab session in my new hood, N1 (that's islington non-uk friends)

holly miranda at other music

best worth the wait (in the snow) performance: holly miranda at other music. shar fell in love with holly after hearing her rendition of "ex-factor" in the black cab sessions. i finally got a chance to see her live and for free at her record release partay.

we jammed into the cozy store with cd racks pushed to the edges for holly plus band to rip some tunes.

holly was kind enough to sign my 7"x. she likes my name. :)

the in-store was a perfect intimate way to witness holly in her gorgeous glory. if you haven't seen her yet, i advise you do. here's lil taste by yours truly's nate chan.

excuses

best hometown goodness: morning benders' "excuses". yours truly just pumps out another great moment in indie music straight from my hometown. bravo nate chan! this performance was the genius of lead singer chris chu's admiration for phil spector. he even wrote him a letter. wish shar could have been a back-up singer. looked like a ton of fun with chris from girls and john vanderslice in tow. check him out taking snaps with his iphone at the 5:24 mark.

basia's the shore

best consolation prize: basia's belated performance of "the shore" from my home state two years ago. it's was beautifully shot by nate chan for la blogotheque and yours truly. it was archived until now. apparently basia and her label didn't want it posted. her latest album "heart of my own" came out on tuesday. she had to cancel her first brooklyn gig back in october, and i totally snoozed on her intimate release party at professor thom's last thursday thrown by paste and rough trade. this was a nice little gem to mend my broken basia heart. basia please come back soon.

for those haven't discovered her lovely pipes and autoharp skillz, stream her new album below. special note: if you buy the uk version there's a bonus track, "hush", which she sang as her encore at the highline gig i saw back in september 2008.

nate

noteworthy capturer of moving image and melody: nate chan. i've been familiar with his works for la blogtheque and always intrigued since he is based in my hometown. i was recently reminded of him when i saw holly miranda's cover of jeff buckley's "lover you should've come over". by the by, holly is doing a good job with the covers.

Holly Miranda "Lover You Should've Come Over" (Jeff Buckley cover) from Yours Truly on Vimeo.

it's a simple close up shot of holly working her soulful pipes against sunbeams. this was not a la blogtheque effort but rather a yours truly production. a new find to add to my already growing web address book.
