the method method

The Method MethodThe Method Method by Eric Ryan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

what a treat of a book! admittedly i'm a person against dirty, so this review might be biased however the book is truly inspiring. chronicling adam lowery and eric ryan's ups and downs in the formation of method, they personally reveal the successes and oopses of their 10+ years in the soap business. from slamming a shot of their toilet bowl cleaner to prove a point to the rigors of "homework" in the recruiting process, the book is written personally with a keen sense of humor. an easy quick read that sticks to your core.

design c.l.o.t.

best way to get creative inspiration: design c.l.o.t. at powerhouse arena. shar was fortunate to attend the opening reception for design c.l.o.t. my pal vanessa was showing her final project among other pratt industral design grads. vanessa has taken her pasion for hip hop culture and infused it into housewares and furniture. it's dope to say the least. check it here.

others that impressed me at the showcase were:

* michael roopenian's wooden keyboard
* lys hunter schwartz's tea for two. i could see her stuff with alessi or oxo.
* tawny hixson's cozy cup. her work totally typifies the danish term, "hygge". that warm engulfy feeling you get from a warm sweater or the intimacy of candlelight.
* vanessa marie robinson's for the love of bikes. perfect pre-five boro tour exhibit.
* helene harley kenny's tactile sculptures are perfect for the high line.

you've got a week to catch this show. ends may 9.

tycho

recent culture vulture discovery: tycho. shar discovered the band, or better yet, the man scott hansen while listening to the latest uo music lstn #8. after some interweb surveying, i discovered scott designs really pretty posters and general graphic design goods. it's like design is the bread, and tycho is the meaf. that's one yummy samich.

scott lives in my hometown. for all my friends out there, befriend him and then introduce me to his artsy greatness. he is playing sac on january 30 at the townhouse lounge.

freebie of the day

freebie of the day: acl hotel motel keychain. so since shar's moved to ny i've been sented to a few spots to procure random items for my friend caes back in the bay. a few trips to supreme. even a trip to been to alife and dqm prior to my residency. see a trend here? well, the most recent acquisition was a bit more my vintage, kitschy style.

if you live/work in the hood, stop by and meet michael. he will shake your hand. if you are far, send michael a self-adressed stamped envelop to:

ACL
110 Greene Street #404
New York, NY 10012

you can have your very own too. i think there might be about a hundred left. i'm the proud owner of either #161 or 170. one of them is going to caes.

bling at legion of honor

must sparkles: cartier and america at legion of honor. shar admires jewels, but not much for wearing them. my pal lin got me into the newly opened exhibit. the place was pretty packed however i was able to see, for the most part, the array of tiaras, watches, broaches and other jewelry. my favs were the emerald ring that belonged to majorie merriweather post. that girl had a lot of cartier bling. i do admire grace kelly's 10+ carat engagement ring, but too much ice for me. it's up until april 18, so get there before the jewels got back in their velvet bags.

if shar was rich...

...she would purchase these lovelies. they are the epitome of retro cool. would love to hear the sweet, warm vinyl tunes out of these puppies.

shar got

friends, this is uber awesome 2010 slingshot organizer. it's just the thing you need to get you set for 2010. yes, shar is already planning for next year. i found out about it on the front page of needles & pens. i was going to wait until i went home for the hols, but the desire for the organizer was too great. so i researched new york retailers. lo and behold bluestockings radical books in les carried various colors. i went with the silver on beet. brooklyn purveyors of the 2010 slingshot organizer are:

beacon's closet
sodafine
spoonbill & sugartown books
vox pop

all in billyburg except for the later. i loved my moleskin this year, but for only $6 you can support slingshot's zine and get a schnazzy planner.

most worthy of top design: ace hotel. my pal andy is staying here and i'm jealous. he did let me see the digs. impressive and i can't wait for the restaurant to open helmed by the peeps behind spotted pig and possibly drinks form the peeps of weathered up. my description of design is not as great as my friend catherine's, so i will let the photos speak for themselves.

also, this gal took a flickr set.

renegade craft fair

semi-satisfying repeat crafting event: renegade craft fair. i had a great time last year at the fair despite the blistering heat. this year the fair was moved from mccarren pool to the park. it was more spread out, but fewer booths with less variety. my high school classmate taryn had a booth there, so i had to show her some support. she makes ab fab leather hand cut jewelry and porcelain buttons under the moniker, tom girl. she's awesome and glad i was able to help her hold up her display during the swirls of wind.

i realized i'll be home for the sf renegade. i'm uber excited since i'm curious to see the line-up that the west coast brings. there are quite the crafters there and in the pacific northwest. who's down my bay area crew?

fltgc: heart of the woman @ openhouse and reef

most heaving with romance exhibit: heart of the woman at openhouse. jac picked this for fltgc, which is not surprising and almost appropriate because i have memories of her and her sisters reading harlequin novels in junior high. this exhibit went through the decades of covers from westerns to doctors. there was a special exhibit dedicated to the cover artists, mostly all from canada or new york.

the best part was the make your own harlequin cover. it was a little tricky to figure out out, but once we had it going hilarity ensued. below is jac's awesome cover. my code to pick up my cover didn't work, but i can report that i picked the cover for bedded by a billionaire. i know your bummed. zaid, you totally missed out. you could have been fabio!

surprise public art installation: reef on 97 kenmare street. on our way back from the harlequin romantic goodness, we happened upon this architectural, aesthetic gem by rob ley and joshua g. stein. it's suppose to move, but it was still when we were there. here is what it's suppose to look like in movement:
