return to art: fltgc. my prowlness for art has been waning, but trying to kick start it as the fall approaches. i need to get my butt to the whitney before the yayoi kusama closes. before that i hit up artist space for 2000 wasted years, a retrospective on the "works" of the bernadette corporation. cataloging their early fashion line to publications and films, it's an insight into a diy collective creating thought provoking commentary of our times.

fltgc: hilary lloyd @ artists space

best transatlantic fltgc: hilary lloyd at artist space. another exhibit caught before closing. shar hasn't been on her a- game for her gallery crawling. i'm slowly but surely getting back to it. hilary's debut in new york was perfectly placed in the expansive loft space of artists space. i've always admired the gallery "hidden" in the the unassuming 3rd floor of a nondescript building on wooster street in soho.

walk into a minimal installation of flat screen tvs, projecting slides and video collages. hilary has capture the remarkable shapes and shadows of the mundane everyday. i was particularly taken with the hovering shoulders barely grazing in back light and the simplicity of a sweeping foot as the shadows swap back and forth. hilary's art begs for a soundtrack. i could hear sigur ros or garth stevenson (recent find from all the kula teachers playing it during class). show ends tomorrow so if you can make it, do! you can definitely see why hilary was nominated for the turner prize this year.

fltgc: drawing center and artists space

summer like fltgc: artist space and drawing center. it was unseasonably sunny and warm. hard to pop indoors for art, but i did. soakwd up as many rays as i could get walking a mere 10 blocks.

artist space for mark morrisroe: from this moment. this retrospective is a collection of his intimate polaroids, photograms and collages of layer prints. some of the most poignant shots were of morrisroe's last stages of his battle with hiv.

to pair off fltgc, i hit up the drawing center for drawn from photography. the photorealistic pieces and visually playful drawings were front and center. fun to see a familiar artist, mary temple, i was introduced to at volta.

fltgc: team gallery, artist's space, deitch, 92ytribeca

belated fltgc: team gallery and artist's space. jac and i were sidetracked last week, so we hit up what we intended on last week. first up was team with mutean/rosenblum's untitled. both jac and i were interested when we saw the write up and pic in tony. we both were taken by the notes attached to the paintings.

when one's heart has been broken into, all sorts of weakness are free to enter, shame, anger, stupid indignation, stupid fears - stupid laughter, too

the best way to take people is to to take them for what they think they are. then leave them alone.

because there is no escape from what does not exist.

my fav was the later. the note and the image kinda suits how i'm feeling lately.

next up was marc camille chaimowicz's enough tiranny recalled, 1972-2009. this was our first venture back to the newly renovated artists space, which is now much more open. we dreamed of how awesome it would be to live in the space. chaimowicz has turned the space into a den of lights, found objects and pools of fishes.

we threw in a few more galleries for good measure. at deitch wooster, kristin baker has a vibrant exhibit up entitled splitting twilight. it just opened yesterday and going on until december 19.



last up was 92ytribeca, jac has been walking by the exhibit everyday. jessica dressner has an exhibit up on chinese astrology. dude, we had to support our people. her's her take on mine and jac's sign. isn't it cute?

she and denny renshaw collab with sufjan steven's ablum art and the BQE film.

fltgc: glowlab, location one & artists space

best preview of a future fltgc: david kesting @ glowlab. i was killing time since zaid was running late to meet me at location one, so i popped into glowlab. mr. kesting was in house working on his art and its installation. i met christina ray, founder and director of glowlab. she was uber nice and welcoming of an art novice like myself. i told her about kristin, who told me about glowlab and prompted me to go in the first place.

david kesting's show opens thursday. april 16, 7-9pm. you should totally go. he will be signing his book utopia parkway. there will also be t-shirts on sale with his prints on them. i accidentally grabbed a sample book christina showed me, but i returned it within the hour. sorry glowlab for my sticky fingers! here is a preview of david's show:

must viewing of air: laurie anderson's from the air @ location one. laurie was showing as a special exhibition in honor of location one's 10th anniversary. she uses 3D projection in from the air. sorry the picture doesn't do it justice. go down to location one to view the real deal. caution: the viewing space is pitch black with only the projection of laurie and her dog. if you suffer from achluophobia, i recommend opening the entrance curtain wide for light.

in her other installation, aleph, laurie concentrates sound into space located by a white circle on the floor. here is zaid demonstrating. it kinda looks like he is being abducted by aliens, huh?

belated fltgc staple: artists space. i haven't been back to artists space since the first time i went. i really enjoyed ilana halperin's lava medallions.

i also liked francesco simeti's colorful wallpaper.

lastly saul becker's nature preserves remind me of dr. seuss' the lorax.

i will be back for the black room premieres. i was really drawn to these posters. something about the simpleness and typeface. i'm sure catherine could provide a better description to my plain speak.

return of friday lunch time gallery crawl: for one reason or another we haven't had a crawl for a few weeks, but it continued today at artist space. jac picked this one is twas fun and eclectic. jac was wooed by the new normal exhibit, but i end up really liking christa blatchford's see around which has video of shorelines and white tuffets to sit on to enjoy the waves.

site you should check out if you like assignments: learningtoloveyoumore.com i learned about this site from a piece at artist space. assignment #50 was on display and there was the cutest pic of a kitten. so cute and tiny. too bad jac didn't have her camera to capture it.


fltgc preview: on our way to artist space we popped into deitch to see the dubossarsky and vinogradov's the new people are already here exhibit, but we were molded because it doesn't open until 6pm tonight. they were still installing bits of it. next friday! deitch - grand street! be there!
